Step-By-Step Masala Soda Recipe

Step 1: Prepare the glass for masala soda

In a tall glass, add the sugar or sugar syrup first, along with some lemon juice. Give everything a nice stir so the sugar begins dissolving into the lemon juice.

Step 2: Add the soda masala

Then add 1 or 2 sachets of hathi soda masala over the melted sugar and lemon juice. Stir everything well with the lemon-sugar mixture until a light, tangy paste forms at the bottom of the glass.

Step 3: Add ice

Add a few ice cubes. This helps your drink stay chilled for longer and also prevents the soda from going flat quickly after pouring.

Step 4: Pour the chilled soda

Slowly pour the chilled soda(unflavoured sparkling water) over the ice. Tilt the glass slightly so it doesn't fizz over. Give it a gentle stir from the bottom, just enough to mix the masala without losing the fizz.

Step 5: Garnish and serve

Garnish the glass with a few mint leaves and serve it immediately before it loses the fizz and while it's still cold.

Masala Soda Recipe Variations

Jaljeera Soda:

Just replace the Soda Masala with any good-quality jaljeera masala in the same amount. This variant gives you a stronger jeera-mint flavour and is most popular at chaat stalls alongside pani puri.

Extra Tangy Variant:

If you prefer extra-tangy flavours in your soda without adding extra lemon juice. Then you can add a small pinch of black salt along with the soda masala. It gives you a deeper, tasty, and more digestive-friendly tang.

Spiced Variant:

You can add a tiny pinch of black pepper powder on top of the soda just before serving. It adds a sharper, spicier kick to your normal, so common soda. This variant also helps with digestion.

Serving Suggestions

Masala soda is meant to be served ice-cold, right after mixing, with the fresh fizz in the glass.

This drink pairs well with samosas, pakoras, or any light, fried snack, and it also works just as nicely as a refreshing summer or post-meal drink to reduce the heaviness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is masala soda made of?

Masala soda is a drink made by mixing chilled soda water (sparkling water) with a tangy masala blend, lemon juice, and some sugar. A good-quality soda masala usually contains many spices, including black salt, dry ginger, and amchur.

Can I make masala soda without lemon?

Yes. You can skip the lemon juice entirely if you prefer a gentler tang. The soda masala by hathi already contains a little tangy base, so the drink will still taste flavourful without lemon. You can also add a pinch of black salt along with soda masala.

Is masala soda good for digestion?

Yes. Masala soda usually contains ingredients such as black salt and dry ginger. Both of these spices are traditionally used to aid digestion, especially after a heavy meal or a meal filled with masala.

Can I make masala soda for children?

Yes. You have to slightly reduce the amount of soda masala mix and slightly increase the sugar so the masala soda tastes gentler and sweeter, and is fun for children.

Why does my masala soda taste flat?

Most of the time it happens when you pour the soda too early or stir too quickly. Make sure to add the soda water at last, over ice, and always stir gently just once to preserve the fizz.

How much Hathi Soda Masala should I use per glass?

You should use around 1 tsp per 200 ml glass of soda; it works well for most adults. You can start by adding 0.5 tsp, then adjust to taste the next time you make it.

Can I make a big batch of masala soda for guests?

Yes, you can prepare a mixture of the masala, sugar, and lemon juice and store it in a jug. Add ice and soda right before serving. If you add the soda early and store it, then the drink goes flat, so always pour it in at the last minute.
